How are you doing? How are you REALLY doing?Pastor's Ponderings, January 20th, 2024 My husband, Gene, has a way with people that causes them to open up and tell him their life's story. Sometimes it's servers at restaurants and other times it's perfect strangers in stores. I think his smile draws them in, but it's his ability to listen intently that gives them confidence to share some of their deepest concerns. People can tell when you're genuinely interested and they can't help but be drawn to someone who is truly listening. We greet one another with, "How are you doing?" but it's not an inquiry. We don't really want to know the details. Generally speaking, people are used to hiding their pain unless it's overwhelming and can't be ignored. People act as though everything's okay when actually it's not okay. Today I met Lisa, a receptionist at a doctor's office, who put a smile on everybody's face who walked in. When the waiting room was empty, I began talking to her. I found out that three years earlier her husband had died of cancer after being married 25 years. She lives alone with her cat and is working to cope with the financial burden she now carries. She said it was really hard at times and her eyes filled with tears. Just then someone came in and it was back to business. She smoothed her hair, straightened her chair and got back to work. You would have never known that she had been on the verge of tears. Beneath this veneer of professionalism was a woman with a lot of pain. How many people are like that, all business on the outside yet suffering on the inside? How many people like Lisa have I passed by unaware they were struggling to keep things together? Before I left, I told her I'd pray for her and put her name on the church's prayer list. Her face brightened and she said she needed it. If I see her again, and I hope I do, I'll ask her "How are you doing?" Then I'll say, "So, Lisa, how are you REALLY doing?" I truly care, I want the details and I'll listen intently.
Soli Deo Gloria (Glory to God Alone)
