A Message From Pastor Rebecca

A Message From Pastor Rebecca

“Homecoming” was the theme of my Advent sermons in 2015 as I was just finishing up six rounds of chemo and four weeks of high intensity radiation. Just like this year, I came crashing into Advent, and for the first time since I left seminary, I was going home for Christmas. Thank goodness I had an associate to cover Christmas Eve. While reflecting on what that all meant to me, I wrote a little home poem that I want to share with you as you contemplate what home means for you. Wherever you spend this season, my prayer is that your spirit will feel at home with God.

HOME:
A pushpin on a world map
hanging on a wall,
out-dated family photos
displayed in the fellowship hall,
the green bean casserole
with the not-so secret sauce,
all the recipes you ever made
and all the ones you lost,
a box of cards and letters
that you cart from place to place,
a porch or tree or stone or hill
that used to be sacred space,
the stain in the carpet left
from a potluck way back when,
the light above the door that's out,
the faucet that's dripping again,
the sanctuary drenched in smells
of candles, books and flowers,
remembering each prayer offered there—
yours, mine and ours—
the liturgy of word and song,
familiar lines and new,
hymns and anthems that teach the heart
and tell us what to do,
the smells that you remember,
that take you back so fast—
saddle soap and leather,
all those fragrances of the past,
animals and barnyards
and ocean fields of grain
and wind that's scented with the sage,
and pine trees after rain—
the emptiness inside you feel,
that wanting to belong,
that aching sound that you can hear
in a whistle or a song.
The car is getting closer now
here's the bend in the road
that Dad used to tell us he could drive
while keeping his eyes closed.
The place should be familiar
but it's also mighty odd.
My heart will know that we’ve arrived
when we are home with God.

Celebrate Christmas Eve at Church of the Mountains

Celebrate Christmas Eve at Church of the Mountains

We’re excited to celebrate the joy and wonder of Christmas Eve with you and our friends in the Truckee faith community.  Mark your calendar and plan to join us as we prepare our hearts for the birth of Christ.

4:00 PM – Truckee Lutheran Presybyterian Church (TLPC) Family Service

Our friends from Truckee Lutheran Presbyterian Church (TLPC) will lead a family-friendly Christmas gathering perfect for families wanting an earlier celebration. Expect joyful music, the Christmas story, and a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere.

5:30 PM – Christmas Bell Ringing Service (Church of the Mountains)

Join us for a cherished Church of the Mountains tradition as we ring our historic bell to welcome Christmas. Everyone is invited to ring the bell for their Christmas wish, creating a beautiful moment of community hope and joy. For the kids, we’ll also have bell-shaped cookies to decorate—a festive and fun treat to celebrate the season.

7:30 PM – Candlelight Service (Church of the Mountains)

Enjoy Christmas Eve evening in quiet reverence, serenity and beauty. Our candlelight service gathers us together for community,  traditional carols, the reading of the nativity story, and the gentle glow of candles filling the sanctuary—a timeless way to welcome the holy night.
