"This week is Father's Day and the spotlight is on MANPOWER.   Celebrate men!   Our own men:  Dan Hopper, Louis Pare and Ken Gruys are coming together as the "Acoustic Dads" to perform songs about fathers and sons - written by fathers and sons - sung by fathers and sons.  And then Pastor Pat is going to lead and sing "I was there to hear your Borning Cry"   My eyes are full of tears as I put the lyrics in the slides.  If you are thinking of missing a service, don't make it this one" Heidi Kuzma, Music Director

Message from Pastor Rebecca

Message from Pastor Rebecca

I grew up in Billings, Montana, where I could see four mountain ranges
from the rimrocks behind my house. Ever since, I have looked at life (and
ministry) as a series of mountains to climb. For the past five years, I have been
the pastor of Eureka First United Methodist Church and spent much of that time
climbing up and back down the Covid mountain.

Earlier this spring, I began thinking about new mountains to climb. Then I
got an email about a “unique ministry opportunity” in Truckee from United
Methodist Bishop Sandy Olewine, and my heart jumped. I’ve been living “by the
Bay”—San Francisco, Monterey, and Humboldt—for almost 30 years. And while
the coastal range has its charms (redwood trees being chief among them), they
have never seemed like real mountains to me.

But it wasn’t just the physical geography of Truckee that attracted me. It
was the challenging spiritual geography: three denominations in two
congregations sharing space in one building at a time when the surrounding
landscape is decidedly post-denominational if not post-Christian. Now, that’s a
mountain to climb!

So, today I am packing boxes, checking to make sure I’ve got all my gear.
What is it from my previous climbing experiences that I want to take with me?
And in the interests of lightening the load for a mountain crossing, what do I need
to leave behind?

I will be sure to pack some good stories that I’ve picked up on the trail
over 36 years in ministry. And I will bring a heart that is eager to hear your
stories. I want to know who you were, who you are, and who you are yearning to
be. For, while I love history, I live for the “might be,” in myself and in others.
Beyond that I bring a passion to know Christ and to help others
experience the power of the resurrection in their life [Philippians 3:10], to go
deeper, climb higher, and hunger for more. The glory of God, Irenaeus used to
say, is a human being fully alive, and I live to see others come alive.

By the grace of God, I will leave behind all the things that could impede
my climb: the mustn’ts, the shouldn’ts, the couldn’ts, the won’ts. I will need to
because 1) you are already doing so and 2) there is no mountain that the people
of God—led by the Spirit of God, humbled by the mercy of God, healed by the
suffering of God, and empowered by the love of God—cannot climb. I
wholeheartedly believe that, and very soon, I will be here to climb with you.

Yours in Christ,
Rebecca
