On Saturday, August 29, our community gathered to mark a historic milestone: the official ribbon cutting of the newly restored Sipes Parsonage.

The morning ceremony was a joyous celebration of history, community, and fresh beginnings, marking our 4th year of our ambitious 5-year campus rejuvenation project.

More than just a preserved piece of Truckee history, the revived Sipes Parsonage now serves as a welcoming home for Pastor Rebecca, Hank, and Sophie and a welcoming center of peace and love for the community. Following the ceremonial bell ringing, attendees enjoyed an open house reception, touring the updated space and celebrating together over refreshments.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to every volunteer, donor, and community member who poured time and energy into this multi-year effort. The Sipes Parsonage stands as a shining testament to what our community can accomplish together!

This past Sunday, following our morning worship service, members of our congregation gathered in the Fellowship Hall for a special Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.

The catered event served as a heartfelt thank-you to the many dedicated individuals whose tireless efforts, generosity, and service continuously enliven and support the Church of the Mountains community.

Beyond the delicious food and warm words of gratitude, the afternoon offered a welcome space for volunteers to relax, reflect, and enjoy rich fellowship with one another.

To each and every person who has offered their time, talent, or energy to Church of the Mountains over the past year, thank you! Your faithful service and open hearts shape our vibrant community and make our shared ministry possible.

In the spring of this year, the new Lay Leader of the Great Northern District of the California-Nevada Annual Conference, Megan Blasko from Reno First UMC, contacted me about a nomination for a laity award at our yearly Conference session in Sacramento in June. Each year, the Conference recognizes outstanding service by a lay person from each of our districts. (The Great Northern District covers all of California north of Sacramento and the northern 2/3 of Nevada!) 

Megan told me that the award theme for this year was “healing the world” which is the last part of the Conference mission statement: “Follow Jesus, Thrive in Community, and Heal the World.” She was interested in knowing who was involved in planning the service we held for the avalanche victims in February. I immediately thought of Kathleen Zemaitis. But I wanted to share some of the other healing work that she has been doing, so I wrote up a nomination that included Kathleen’s work with the LGBTQIA community to organize the annual Truckee Pride celebrations. I included how she and John have worked so hard to “heal” our historic buildings. And I talked about her inspiration and leadership in starting an evening service for those who may need to “heal” their wounds from past church experiences or who are just unfamiliar with our traditions. I mentioned that she has also reached out to the community and helped us open our doors to youth and arts organizations. And I couldn’t leave out her hospitality and way of connecting with people that make them feel like they belong to our church family.

Kathleen would be the first to say that she didn’t do any of this alone, and that is true. This has been an all-church effort to revitalize the congregation and its ministry in the community, but her faith and spirit and what William Sloan Coffin, Jr. called her “passion for the possible” were absolutely key to getting us going. We’ve all known the gifts that Kathleen and John have shared with us, and we are so grateful. Now the whole California-Nevada Annual Conference knows. Well done, Kathleen!

Led by Judy Jensen, our Women’s Bible Study is a warm, informal space to grow in faith and fellowship. We gather each week to read, discuss selected books, and support one another through prayer.

Our group also serves as part of the Prayer Net, holding up requests shared by our broader church family.
