Urgent: Speak Up May 19 — Your Voice Needed on the Railyard Hotel Project
The proposed Railyard Hotel Project will be presented to the Truckee Planning Commission on Tuesday, May 19 at 5:00 PM, and we encourage our community to stay informed and engaged. This is an important moment for our neighborhood and for Church of the Mountains, as the project raises several concerns that may impact our congregation, campus, and surrounding residential area. Here is link to the Railyard Hotel Project: https://www.townoftruckee.gov/654/Railyard-Hotel Our issues are: 1 . Transition from the historic district does not feel seamless. This is a block building next to a historic district in direct contrast spelled out in the General Plan that require compatible scale and sensitive transitions between historic districts and new development, particularly where residential and historic uses are adjacent. 2. Public Safety issues are evident given the proposed hotel’s height and massing will cast new shadows across the sidewalk and crossing areas opposite the church, causing icy and unsafe conditions especially during early morning hours, that raise public safety concerns under CEQA—particularly for elderly pedestrians attending services. 3. Parking plans raise concerns about spillover parking into nearby streets and church areas during peak times, creating potential circulation, congestion, and safety impacts to church attendees and Church Street residents that have not been adequately addressed or mitigated. 4. Introduction of noise pollution impacts the surrounding area, particularly during evening and early morning hours impacting the sanctity of worship, reflection and pastor care and noise impacts to residential life. 5.Increased light pollution affects nearby residential areas, contrary to the General Plan’s emphasis on protecting residential livability and minimizing light impacts on both residential and civic spaces, including places of worship. We invite you to attend the meeting in person if you’re able, and to share your perspective by submitting a public comment using the link below. Your voice matters, and thoughtful community input plays an important role in the decision-making process. For more infomation visit:

A Note From Pastor Rebecca
In the church calendar, this Sunday is Ascension Sunday, the last Sunday before the celebration of Pentecost on May 24th. For the Easter season, we have been taking a tour through the Christian virtues as listed in Colossians 3. And on Sunday, we will conclude with the crowning virtue of the Christian life that encompasses all others: love. You have probably heard many sermons on this theme, but you may not have heard one about how love, or the lack thereof, impacts our mental health. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and in a time when we are very concerned about the mental well-being of our neighbors (and ourselves), the church has a message that the world is literally dying to hear. We all have friends and family members who struggle with mental illness, and we have all experienced challenges to our mental health as well. How can the love of God lift us up when we are feeling down and bind us together when we are feeling broken? These are the questions that life keeps asking us and we keep diving into Scripture for answers. Come swimming with us this Sunday. |
